What is a Podiatrist?
Podiatry is a field of healthcare devoted to the study and treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle, and the knee, leg and hip, collectively known as the lower extremity.
Podiatry by definition is that 'profession of health sciences concerned with the research prevention, diagnosis and treatment of deformities, pathologies and injuries of the foot and associated structures - in relation with the body as well as the manifestations of systemic diseases - by all appropriate systems and technologies using scientific and professional specialised knowledge'.
A podiatrist is a medical specialist who aims to improve the mobility, independence and quality of life for their patients. Podiatrists provide medical diagnosis and treatment of foot, ankle and lower limb problems in adults and children, such as bunions, heel pain, muscle and tendon injuries, hammertoes, neuromas, ingrown toenails, warts, corns and calluses. A podiatrist also provides care of sprains, fractures, infections, and injuries of the lower limb.
Foot disorders are among the most widespread and neglected health problems affecting people.
Typically, podiatrists:
Consult with patients and other physicians on how to prevent and treat foot problems.
Diagnose and treat skin and nail diseases, ingrown toenails, ulcers, fractures and deformities.
Diagnose biomechanical abnormalities and prescribe patients with inserts called orthotics to correct walking patterns.
Provide essential foot care for elderly or disabled person unable to reach their own feet.
Vascular and neurological assessment and wound management for diabetic patients, if required.
Physical therapy, palliative care for foot and lower limb pains.
