Retracted toe
A deformity in which the metatarsophalangeal joint is so hyperextened that the apex of the toe is non-weight-bearing. The proximal and distal interphalangeal joints may be neutral or plantarflexed.
The toe may become fixed, due to soft tissue changes and muscular action.
The tips of the toes do not touch the ground and the metatarsophalangeal joints may be subluxed.
Poorly fitting footwear restricts toe movement.
Treatment
‘Toe props’ under affected lesser toes to hold the toes out straight, relieving pressure and
increase function.
Padding, rigid or soft orthoses for dorsal and plantar toe lesions to protect areas from pressure.
Footwear advice.
