Ingrown toenails (onychocryptosis)
At Greg Robinson Podiatrist (practice contact number 010 110 0171), he encounters ingrown toenail complaints on a daily basis making them one of the most common conditions treated at his practice.
Ingrown nails are nails whose corners or sides dig painfully into the skin, often causing infection.
The condition mostly affects the outer edge of the big toe, although the nail on both sides of the toe, or nail on any toe can become ingrown.
Patients usually present with pain in the affected toe. With progression, infection, severe pain and even difficulty walking or playing sports can occur.
Greg is well trained in the latest techniques in treating ingrown nails and can offer great pain relief permanently.
Although many treatment modalities are used including conservative nail trimming, loose footwear and antibiotics, surgical nail wedge resection with phenol matrixectomy (under local anaesthetic) remains the definitive permanent treatment option for ingrown toenails.
Two common ingrown nail precedes performed by Greg,
Conservative ingrown toenail removal, offering painless removal of the offending nail piece. Ingrown toenails must be professionally trimmed to gently remove the nail portion that is pressing into the skin along the side of the nail bed. Trimming ingrown nails at home can increase the risk of infection, and unless the nail is trimmed properly the ingrown nail can recur.
A Nail Wedge Resection (NWR) offers permanent removal of a thin piece of the offending nail, (the entire nail is not removed). This procedure is a minor procedure performed under local anaesthetic within his practice.

Ingrown nails are frequently caused by improper nail trimming also by ill-fitting shoes (shoe pressure), injury, fungus infection (nail thickening or widening), heredity, various prescription medications and poor foot structure.
Patients are often very reluctant to have the condition treated but this condition will not resolve itself and requires specialist care.
