Burrowing toe

The lesser toes may be burrowed in varus positions with lateral and medial deviation at the interphalangeal joints (IPJ), resulting in periarticular thickening and limitation of movement.

More common in very young children often due to  inadequate hosiery, tight babygros and sleep suites may constrict the toes.
May be due to tight footwear or as a secondary trait of compensation for biomechanical deformities.
The affected toe on walking takes the weight on the distal end of the toe.

There may be:
    Nail discomfort.
Chronic nail problems with onychauxis (nail thickening) or onychogryphosis.

Treatment includes:
    Advice
    Strengthening exercise
Digital silicone devices – relieving pressure on the adjacent toes, reducing nail discomfort.
Conctact Greg Robinson Podiatrist for the range of ditital silicone devices.
