Overriding and underriding toes
Overriding toes
Overriding toes are characterized by one toe lying on top of an adjacent toe.
The toe is dorsiflexed and adducted, overriding the adjacent toe, with external rotation, causing the toenail to face laterally.
(Second toe overlaps the hallux). (Fifth toe overrides the fourth toe).

Can occur with the second, third, fourth and fifth toes - fifth toe is the most commonly affected.

Underriding toes
The fifth digit is rotated into a varus or inverted position.
Underriding toes usually involve the fourth and fifth toes.
Corns may occur from interdigital pressure due to rotation of the ‘heads’ of the phalanges.
Treatment
Treat inflammation and callus lesions.
Footwear advice.
Surgery.
